Passkey becomes standard in Entra
In 2026, Microsoft will make passkey the default authentication experience in Microsoft Entra, moving away from SMS, voice, and other authentication methods that are vulnerable to phishing.
Starting September 1, 2026, users who are activated for SMS or voice will automatically be included in Microsoft's passkey enrollment campaign.
Users who still use SMS or voice to authenticate must register a passkey to continue logging in.
This means that passkey adoption is moving from being a security initiative to being a practical migration task.
